Natural Twists Professional training Consult only: Aftercare Tips
By Experience This Hair Salon & Barber Shop | October 31, 2026
Quick note: I keep Natural Twists aftercare simple on purpose. In the first 48 hours, don’t wash, don’t heavy-sweat, and don’t pull your twists into tight styles. Nashville humidity and sweat can lift a fresh set fast. Give your twists time to settle, then I’ll have you on a light moisture routine that keeps your scalp calm and your parts clean.
If you booked my Natural Twists Professional training Consult only, you already know I don’t just “do hair.” I teach hair. One of my regulars put it best: you’re going to get “a crash course of how to take better care of your hair.” That’s the goal here too. This guide covers the first 2 weeks, what to do on sweaty Nashville days, and when to come back to see me on the Jefferson Street corridor for a quick check-in.
First 24 to 48 hours: keep twists dry, cool, and hands-off
The first two days are when most frizz and slip-ups happen, usually because you did too much too soon. Fresh twists need time to set. Here’s what I generally recommend right after your appointment.
48-hour rule: Skip washing, swimming, and heavy sweating. If you have a long shift, keep a small towel handy, blot at the hairline, and let your scalp breathe.
Do this in the first 2 days
- Sleep in a satin scarf or bonnet. If you’re not a bonnet person, use a satin pillowcase and keep your twists laid in the direction they naturally fall.
- Smooth with fingertips only. No brushing. No combing. No aggressive “fluffing” at the roots.
- If your scalp feels dry, lightly mist your twists with a water-based leave-in. Keep it light. You’re hydrating, not soaking.
Avoid these early mistakes
- Tight ponytails or buns that pull your edges and scalp. Tension early on can lead to tenderness and frizz at the roots.
- Hats and headbands that rub. In Nashville heat, friction plus sweat is a fast track to fuzz.
- Heavy butters and thick grease at the root. They can attract lint, dull the look, and make your scalp feel congested.
Week 1 twist maintenance in Nashville humidity (and after a long shift)
By week one, your goal is simple: keep your scalp comfortable and your twists neat without over-wetting them. This matters a lot if you work hospitality, venues, or music-industry hours and you’re commuting across town. Sweat happens. The trick is handling it without turning your style into a wash day.
If you sweat, do this instead of washing
- Blot your scalp and hairline with a towel. Don’t rub.
- Let your scalp air-dry fully before you tie anything down.
- If you need a refresh, use a light, water-based spray every 2 to 4 days. Then seal the scalp lightly with a few drops of oil.
What I want you to leave alone
Picking at frizz, re-twisting randomly in the mirror, and overloading product are the three things that usually make twists look older faster. A little frizz is normal. If you try to “fix” it daily, you’ll create more fuzz and more buildup.
North Nashville tip: If you’re heading to a Germantown event and want your twists sharper around the perimeter, I can usually handle a quick cleanup when you’re back near the Jefferson Street corridor. Don’t wait until it unravels completely.
The moisturize-and-seal routine that keeps twists neat (no heavy buildup)
Healthy twists are mostly consistency. I’ve had clients tell me to “trust the process since day one, ” and that mindset applies to maintenance too. You don’t need a cabinet full of products. You need the right types, used lightly.
1) Cleanse gently (when it’s time)
Use a sulfate-free cleanser. If you’re washing while twists are still fresh, focus on the scalp and let the suds rinse down the length. Keep water pressure reasonable. Rough washing is a frizz factory.
2) Moisturize with water first
Every 2 to 4 days, lightly mist with a water-based leave-in. Think “fine mist, ” not “spray bottle soak.” Your twists should feel flexible, not puffy.
3) Seal lightly
Seal with a lightweight oil like jojoba or grapeseed. Use a few drops on the scalp and rub it in with fingertips. If oil is running, it’s too much.
And if you rotate styles, keep it low-tension. Twists pair well with a simple side part, half-up with a soft scrunchie, or a loose bun. Save the slick, tight looks for another style like a Silk Press day or a special event.
Loose twists, irritation, or shedding: when I want you to reach out (2 to 4 weeks)
“Amanda has told me to trust the process since day one. I did just that and I’m so happy that I did. She truly cares about the health of my hair.”
one of our regulars
A little frizz is normal. Mild scalp tightness the first day can be normal too. What I don’t want you to push through is pain, persistent itching, or twists that are sliding loose fast.
Reach out if: you notice scalp irritation that doesn’t calm down, a section unravels, you see unusual shedding, or your twists feel wet or musty after sweating. I’d rather see you early than have you trying to “fix it” at home.
Plan a follow-up consult or retouch in 2 to 4 weeks. That timing works well for most people in Nashville, especially when the weather flips and humidity rises. I serve North Nashville, Downtown, Germantown, Salemtown, East Nashville, Berry Hill, and Donelson, so it’s easy to swing by for maintenance before weekend plans.
If you’re building a longer-term routine, I also do Sister Lock installs, Micro Lock maintenance and transfers, color, and Silk Press. The common thread is the same: healthy hair first, then the style.

Keep this saved: 5 twist aftercare rules I repeat in the shop
- Wait 48 hours before washing or heavy sweating when you can.
- Satin every night and smooth with fingertips, not brushes.
- Moisture is light: water-based leave-in every 2 to 4 days.
- Oil is lighter: seal with a few drops, not a heavy layer.
- Check in 2 to 4 weeks if you want the set to keep looking fresh.
